India is a very interesting country. It has a long and exciting history. It has many different kinds of people, and many different religions and customs. The climate and geography are quite different in various parts of the country. There are warm, sunny beaches in the south, and high, snowy mountains in the far north. There are steamy jungles, burning deserts, wide rivers, tiny villages, huge cities, ancient monuments and historic ruins.
India's people are as different as its geography. It has a very large population. About one billion (1,000,000,000) people live in India - in other words, almost one out of every six people on this planet.
People in India have many different lifestyles. Some people are rich. Some are very poor. Some people work as doctors, lawyers, teachers, and scientists. Others are farmers, office workers, fishermen, truck drivers, and laborers or factory workers. Some others have very traditional lifestyles. They may be forest dwelling tribal people, or nomads in the desert raising camels. And there are even a few people who really do ride elephants.
There are many cultures within India. There are different religions. In fact, several of the world's great religions started here. There are many different languages spoken in India. There are many forms of art, dance, and music, too.
All these differences make India an interesting country to study. But it is also difficult to get a clear idea of what it is like. India can be very modern and also very old fashioned at the same time.
